CPB Radio Station Renewal Project: Phase II Stations Announced

CPB Radio has selected five stations to participate in Phase II of the Station Renewal Project, which began in March 2006.  The five stations will receive funding to implement changes that were outlined in Phase I of the project.  The project is designed to help a competitively selected group of radio stations significantly improve their community service as measured by the Audience Service Criteria (ASC) of the Community Service Grant (CSG) program.

The five stations competitively selected for Phase II are:

KDHX, St. Louis, MO
KRCL, Salt Lake City, UT
KVCR, San Bernardino, CA
WIPR, San Juan, Puerto Rico
WUMB, Boston, MA

The stations were chosen from the ten stations that participated in Phase I of the Station Renewal Project in Fall 2006.  In that phase of the project, each station received a thorough needs assessment conducted by Public Radio Capital.  The assessments included evaluations of governance and licensee issues; station management and leadership; programming strategy and execution; fundraising; and organizational capacity.  Each station was presented with a plan for changes designed to increase their audience and/or financial performance and invited to apply for participation in Phase II - Implementation.

Each Phase II station has received a two year grant that will allow them to transform the way they serve their audiences.  Public Radio Capital, a nonprofit organization focused on strengthening and expanding public radio services nationwide, will continue as the Managing Consultant for the Project.

CPB, a private, nonprofit corporation created by Congress in 1967, is the steward of the federal government’s investment in public broadcasting.  It helps support the operations of more than 1,000 locally owned and operated public television and radio stations nationwide, and is the largest single source of funding for research, technology, and program development for public radio, television, and related on-line services.
